Fall Planting Guide for Asters

Planting in Flower Beds

1. Choose plants that still have a lot of buds.
2. When planting asters in the ground, lightly tease the roots apart as you would any transplant.
3. Asters prefer rich soil and a sunny position in the garden with at least a half day of sun. They need plenty of air circulation around the plant.
4. No need to fertilize during the fall season.
5. Water newly planted asters immediately after transplanting them. Asters like moisture with well-drained soil. During dry spells, water as needed to keep plants from wilting.

Planting in Containers

1. Choose plants that still have a lot of buds
2. Lightly tease the roots apart as you would any transplant. Plant your asters in containers that are filled with a quality potting mix. Top soil from your yard or garden is too heavy.
3. No need to fertilize asters planted in the fall.
4. Water containers as soon as you have planted them. Water as needed to keep your asters from drying out.
5. Place containers in at least a half day of sun.
6. Container grown asters are not winter Hardy.
