All about Roses May 25, 2017

Roses can be susceptible to a number of pests and diseases. The first signs of a problem will be found by a visual inspection during a walk-through of your garden. Many pests begin their attack on the underside of your leaves. Aphids, spider mites, and rose sawfly worms usually start there and will need to be addressed quickly. There are several remedies for each of these insects.

Neem oil is an organic product, but needs to be reapplied after a rain storm. Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew is also a great preventative and comes in a ready to use spray bottle. We have a new product this year, Bayer 3 in 1 Insect and Disease Control. This will not only protect against bugs but also many common diseases.

There are a few fungal diseases that you need to be alert for. Powdery Mildew, black spot, and rust, are the most common. A great preventative is Bayer All-In-One Rose & Flower Care. It has insecticide, fungicide, and fertilizer in one product. A good product to use is a copper base fungicide. It is important to note that you should not water overhead because this promotes Black spot.
