All about Roses July 6, 2017

One of the best things that you can do to promote more flowers, is to deadhead your roses regularly. This allows your rose to put more energy into producing new flowers, instead of trying to keep the spent blossoms alive. When deadheading, find the first set of 5 leaves and cut just above them at an angle. You will see a small nub next to the stem, which is where the new flower will come from. Roses that are deadheaded are healthier. Keep in mind that you should stop deadheading around the first week in September, the same time you stop fertilizing. This will get your roses ready for winter hibernation.

It is important to mulch your roses. Mulching helps to control moisture. It enhances the appearance of the bed and aids in weed control. It’s no fun to dive into a thorny rose bed in the spring to get out the weeds. I would not recommend using stones for mulch. They gather a lot of extra heat which is not good for your roses. It pulls moisture from the soil instead of holding it in.

My season is just about over and I won’t be at the greenhouse as much as I have been. I want to thank you for a wonderful season and for sharing our love of roses. Many of you shared your success with me and even brought in pictures. It pleases me greatly to have been able to help.
